Tools and Supplies
Using the right tools will make the job easier, but finding those right tools might take some time. You can build your tool kit gradually. Take your time and try new products in small amounts and use them in a discrete area. This way you can experiment safely and cheaply.
The right tool or product is not necessarily the most expensive. It’s the best tool for the lowest price. Avoid getting locked into proprietary solutions. For example, choose head attachments for mops that use standard fittings. Choose tools with cross-brand interchangeable parts. Single-purpose tools perform better than multi-purpose tools in many cases.
Choose reusable and washable tools whenever possible. Some tools are cheap because you have to replace them all the time. Organize your tools and supplies so that they are portable. This will simplify your daily routine by keeping everything in reach. Own your tools; read the instructions, learn how to use and take care of them. Some of our efficiency comes from proficiency.
Basic Tools
Below is a list of tools and supplies you can use to start or update your toolbox. Most of the item can be found at the hardware store.
Microfiber Cloths
Microfibre cloths clean better and we can wash and reuse them for longer. They trap dust well, making them ideal for dusting. Buy enough so you have some to use while washing the others. Special attention is required when washing your microfibre cloths:
- wash separately from other fabrics
- use gentle liquid laundry detergent free of fragrance and no bleach
- use cool or warm water
- use delicate wash cycle or hand wash
- pre-soak
- use low heat or hang to dry

Rubber Gloves
Choose the heavy-duty ones with long cuffs. By heavy-duty I mean thicker than standard yellow dish washing gloves, available at the dollar store. The cuffs should be long enough that you can roll them to create a hem that will capture water dripping down when washing upward.
Cleaning Caddy
Any container, such as a large rectangular bucket, that you can use to move around your most frequently used tools and supplies. Having them handy will save you a few trips to the storage room.
Small Bucket
A small bucket, around 5 litres, is easier to carry and it sufficient for hand washing.
Large Bucket
A larger bucket, 12 litres or more, will be necessary when using mops, soaking, or hand-washing.
Spray Bottles
Use commercial/professional one that you refill with your own store-bought or homemade cleaning mix. Often the bottles that come as the container of products are cheap and do not last. Check that the bottle you buy is resistant to the product it will contain.
Small Brush
A brush small enough to clean hard-to-reach corners and angles. An old toothbrush will work, but a denture brush is an event better choice. It is double sided with one side to brush and one tapered to reach in the gaps. The handle is angled to clear your hand from the surface.
2" Paint Brush
This is perfect for dusting crack and negative bevelled details on doors.
Small Plastic Scrapper
A scraper is especially useful when cleaning floors and getting something stuck to them. You can use a metal scraper but you must be careful because it can damage some surfaces.
Toilet Brush
It should not be in your kit, but should be kept near the toilet. A toilet brush is useful for a quick clean (damage control). To properly clean a toilet you need more than a brush. Choose a brush that comes with a container you can close.
Broom and Dust Pan
This is not to keep in your kit, but find a central hidden place that will be quick and easy to access.
Reusable Half-Face Respirator
Some jobs may generate a lot of dust or fumes.
